Temple History

Our temple history starts around a holy tree by the name Katta Puliamaram ( a Tamarind tree well grown in the 16th century and lives strong till to date) seen as a witness of Sithar’s supernatural divine power, located 1.5 kilometers away from the Sithar temple in the Puliyuran village. A Sithar in the hills of the south Pothigai region (a peak in the Western Ghats ) of South TamilNadu, was a realized and an accomplished saint, meditated strenuously, by the strength of penance he attained the supernatural powers called as “Siddhis’ ‘.The Sithar from his subjective thought, desiring to serve the devotees from the intellect he gained from the attainment of Siddhis, came and lived under the tamarind tree of the Puliyuran village. With this spiritual power, he treated the villagers with medicines and holy water for poisonous bites, skin rashes, and many ailments. He specialized in handling the strong poisonous bites by his extraordinary power. The villagers got cured of their diseases and were happy for his meticulous work. Sithar offered prayers for the prosperity and wellness of the villagers.

Sithar accepted offerings from the villagers for his prayers, and did his prayer in the nighttime. He was keen and sincere in doing his prayers regularly for the 21 demigods and due to his divine strength, the 21 demigods appeared in front of him and accepted his sacred food. He was also very particular that the prayers should not be seen by others. One of our ancestors, who lived in the village at that time, was curious to know about the activities of Sithar. So he followed him one night, hid near the tamarind tree and saw the prayers. Unfortunately, the prayers were not answered and the 21 demigods did not appear before him to accept the sacred food. By his awakening the Sithar could easily find the reason, and by his divine strength he induced a snake to bite our ancestor hiding near the Tamarind tree. Our ancestor became unconscious, and now the 21 demigods appeared before the Sithar and accepted his sacred food. After the prayer, Sithar felt grace on our ancestor and made him conscious with the holy water. Our ancestor prayed to Sithar for his kind act. Sithar blessed him as his disciple, and told him “as a disciple of mine, be with me, assist me and serve the villagers till I attain the state of salvation “ I would be virtual with a sacred presence and words in yourself “. Let the heirs continue the service to the devotees, “ I promise that your heirs’ generation would prosper with treasures of health, wealth, and happiness.“

Our ancestor, after gaining the grace of Sithar, followed monastic life and had loyal reverence with Sithar as exalted as Thambiran. He sincerely served the devotees with holy water and holy ash for their various diseases like skin rashes and strong poisonous bites by helping Sithar in his activities, till Sithar attained salvation. Later Sithar attained the state of salvation. (the voluntary leaving of the mortal coil) Thambiran entombed the Sithar and raised a sanctum above the tomb. He enshrined the temple as “SITHAR TEMPLE ” and consecrated Sithanathar as the presiding deity of Sithar Temple. He regularly performed prayer and presented sacred food for the 21 demigods and Sithanathar and treated the devotees with holy water and holy ash for their illness. The devotees were blessed with prosperity and their prayers were answered by the grace of Sithar. Later Thambiran attained the state of salvation. The heir’s of Thambiran entombed him next to Sithar sanctum and raised a sanctum above the tomb for Thambiran and consecrated a pedestal structure in the second stage sanctum. The heirs of Thambiran continued the services to the devotees by the grace of Sithar and renovated the temple to facilitate the devotees and managed the temple administration, now the temple stands by the name “Arulmigu Chithanatha Gurunathasamy koil”.
